Abstract

This study examined the mediating effects of I-self system impairment and emptiness on the relationship between disconnection and rejection schemes and binge eating behavior. Participants were 361 individuals (female=187, male=174) who responded to the following questionnaires on disconnection and rejection schemes, I-self system impairment, emptiness, and binge eating behavior. Reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling were conducted. The structural equation model confirmed an acceptable fit index and a dual mediating effect using the bootstrap method. The results revealed significant positive correlations between binge eating, disconnection and rejection schemes, I-self system impairment, and emptiness. Additionally, I-self system impairment and emptiness mediated the relationship between disconnection and rejection schemes and binge eating behavior. Emptiness mediated the relationship between disconnection and rejection schemes and binge eating. However, I-self system impairment did not mediate the relationship between disconnection and rejection schemes and binge eating behavior. Implications, limitations and recommendations for future research are presented.
